What is the JLPT?

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (日本語能力試験, Nihongo Nōryoku Shiken), known as the JLPT, is a standardized criterion-referenced test to evaluate and certify the Japanese language proficiency of non-native speakers.

The test covers language knowledge, reading ability, and listening ability and has five levels: N1, N2, N3, N4 and N5. The easiest level is N5 and the most difficult level is N1.

 N5 & N4 - Basic Japanese

The N5 (Beginner Level) & N4 (Advanced Beginner Level) classes focus on building up your Fundamental Japanese, like sentence structure, usage of particles, past tense, basic conjuctions and verb conjugations. It's also necessary to have mastered Hiragana (ひらがな) and Katakana (カタカナ) and simple everyday Kanji in this level.

 N3 - The Bridge

The N3 (Intermediate Level) classes are when your Japanese language skills are comparable to Japanese middle school pupils. You should also be able to keep up with everyday situations in Japan with relative ease. You may be at this level if you can understand newspaper headlines and have a discussion with a native Japanese individual.

N2 & N1 - Advanced to Expert Japanese

If you really want to work at a Japanese Company or Incorporate Japanese into your work, this is the test to take! The N2 (Proficient Level) and N1 (Expert Level) classes are the most demanding reading and listening comprehension assessments. When the situation requires it, you should be able to freely express yourself in the language both casually and formally.
